The launch of Bodega Tours coincides with the mega-wine event of Barcelona, La Música del Vi, organized by Vila Viniteca, the wholesale and retail wine company based out of Barcelona and owned by Quim Vila, but known all over Spain. Only put on every two years, this was the seventh such event, and my first.
I was invited by a new friend Salvador Dangla, editor of Spanish high-end hi-fi magazine Alta Fidelidad and classic wine collector extraordinaire. He may be Quim Vila´s best individual customer, given the excellent treatment he receives by the hands of Vila employees.
La Música del Vi hosts over 140 wineries from 32 Spanish D.O. appellations and 22 international appellations, similar to Wine Spectator´s Grand Tour. The event is spread out over two days, with the first day devoted to an unusual wine-tasting contest, the Premio Vila Viniteca de Cata por Parejas, (Vila Viniteca Prize for 2-person Team Tasting). Unusual in that the prize is awarded to a team composed of 2 persons that cooperate in identifying still, sparkling and fortified wines in a double blind, 2-round wine tasting elimination. From the initial 120 couples that start, only ten get to the final round.
